Hackleburg Press Conference 5/6/2011

This article was originally posted on HackleburgHelpingHands.com.

On May 6 the town of Hackleburg held a press conference that was covered by most major news outlets, both TV and newspapers.  If you watch the local news you may get some information, but so far they have not given to much specifically on Hackleburg

Points of interest:

  • We are not turning any supplies or people away (Supplies still need to go to the Distribution Center Drop off at 800 Bexar Ave. East Hamilton, AL 35570)
  • Information on having to fill out applications or check in for volunteers outside of town is not true.  This only applies if you are going through the Red Cross or other national groups.
  • To volunteer still come into town. Tell the check point personnel you are volunteering in Hackleburg.  Follow the signs for “Staging” to the corner of Hwy. 172 and Culpepper Road (just a 1/4 mile down from the ‘old’ location)
  • It is not true that you have to have hard hats, steel toe shoes, or any other safety equipment.  If you have them bring them.  Then you will be able to do work that you could not do without them.  But all Volunteers are needed.
  • If you are wanting to volunteer this weekend, the focus is still on debris clean up.  Things that would help would be garbage bags, large garbage cans, and work gloves.

For clarification our information is coming directly from the Chief of Police Kenny Hallmark and those in those meetings.  This site, updates, and our Facebook (www.facebook.com/HackleburgHelpingHands) is all By the People, For the People!

Water and Clothing

Due to the overwhelming response of local and not-so-local people, we no longer can accept water or clothing at the Hamilton Distribution Center. Other places may be able to accept these items.

If you are wanting to bring items for distribution please call Brittney or Danielle at (571) 439-1825 to ensure that there is room to accommodate your load. Again, thank you so much for your “above and beyond” response to the need at hand.

Update on Donations

Please do not send clothing at this time. We do not currently have need of clothing. We will at this time, however accept pillows, blankets, socks, shoes, new (preferably still in sealed packages) underwear and undergarments and all baby and toddler supplies. Check back in about a week on anything other than that.

What we do need: Water, canned goods, baby food and formula, ice (upon demand, please call first if you have access), snack foods (that do not have to be cooked), and the like.

A HUGE need we have currently is DAILY CONSUMABLES. Things that are used up on a daily basis like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, batteries, diapers, toilet paper, paper plates, plastic eating utensils, plastic and styrofoam cups, paper towels, etc.

Also, if anyone would like to donate medication, we will ONLY accept over-the-counter, unopened, untampered-with and unused medications. At this time, we WILL NOT accept prescription medications. ALL bottles, boxes and tubes we receive that are opened, tampered-with or used WILL BE THROWN AWAY.

Target and Sam’s in Florence Send Donations

Today I got to go to Florence to Target Store #1322 and Sam’s Club to pick up some donations. All I can say is “Wow!” Overwhelmed at the generosity isn’t saying enough. Below are some pictures of what they donated.
